A project to improve traffic flow by adding truck climbing lanes at two locations along Interstate 81 in southwest Virginia is currently under construction. The truck climbing lane work zones are located northbound at mile marker 32.4 in the Glade Spring area of Washington County and southbound at mile marker 34 in Washington County near Chilhowie.
VDOT held a virtual design public meeting for the project in April 2021.
Benefits
The project is funded through the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program and will improve traffic flow by providing truck climbing lanes on steep grades at three locations on I-81 in southwest Virginia.
